Yesterday I finally stopped guessing how much electricity my solar panels were saving. I added a hybrid deye inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery to our system, and the difference became obvious within the week.
My reason was peak-hour pricing. Before the battery, our routine—cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging two laptops—pulled power from the grid just when rates were highest. Now the battery charges from excess solar around midday and carries the house from 4 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, our grid usage after sunset is almost nothing. Our bill has fallen from about $185 to $72, although winter weather still pushes it higher. I like opening the monitoring app and seeing the battery discharging instead of watching expensive grid imports climb.
The surprise has been how quietly it works. I hear a faint hum when the inverter is working hard, but there is no equipment noise in the garage. The battery also keeps our refrigerator, internet router, and lights running during outages. That backup power is not the same as running the whole house, but it covers the things we notice most.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After changing the battery reserve from 20% to 10%, the system stopped discharging in the evening. The app showed plenty of stored energy, but the inverter was protecting the reserve setting. I restored the reserve to 20%, restarted the battery controller, and normal discharge returned. I now leave a bigger emergency reserve because an unexpected outage is more valuable to me than squeezing out a few extra dollars.
After several months, the solar battery feels less like a gadget and more like part of our daily routine. The biggest win is not independence from the grid; it is using our own solar power when electricity costs the most.
