Running my solar energy storage system has changed how I think about electricity bills. Before installing a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, I watched excess midday solar disappear back into the grid while we bought expensive power after dinner.
The biggest difference shows up between 4pm and 9pm. My inverter now charges the battery from rooftop panels during the day, then runs the refrigerator, lights, induction cooker, and Wi-Fi overnight. On sunny weekdays, grid consumption drops to almost nothing during those peak hours. My evening usage used to add roughly $1.50–$2.00 per night; lately it is usually under fifty cents.
That saving is not dramatic every day because winter clouds and battery reserve settings still matter. I keep 20% in reserve, which gives me some comfort during outages, but it also means I cannot use every stored kilowatt-hour. Still, looking at my utility app, the monthly peak-rate line is noticeably smaller.
One weekend, the battery stopped discharging at sunset. The monitoring app showed a communication warning, and I assumed the inverter had failed. I checked the breaker, then noticed my router had rebooted after a firmware update. Once Wi-Fi returned, the battery status refreshed within about five minutes and discharge resumed. That scare taught me that solar battery troubleshooting is often networking, not hardware.
