Running my home on a 10-kWh battery for six months has changed the way I think about electricity bills.
Before the solar battery, my rooftop panels exported most of their afternoon production while I bought power back during the expensive evening hours. Now the Growatt inverter charges the battery after breakfast and carries us through dinner, then tops up from the grid only if needed.
The biggest difference is peak-hour savings. I set the battery to discharge from 4:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., when our tariff is nearly three times the overnight rate. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches 100% by lunch. We run the induction cooktop, washing machine, and heat pump from stored energy instead of the grid. Last month, my bill was $42 compared with $168 for a similar month before installation. The exact result varies with weather and household habits, but the savings are very noticeable.
I also connected the system to growatt pvoutput because I wanted something simpler than checking the inverter screen. The graphs let me see battery state of charge, solar generation, and overnight consumption. That helped me spot a setting mistake: my reserve was set at 30%, rather than 20%, so the battery stopped discharging earlier than expected. After lowering it, we got another hour of evening coverage without compromising backup power.
The only nuisance has been occasional cloudy-day grid charging. I adjusted the schedule so it does not charge during costly periods, and I keep a 25% reserve for outages.
What I like most is the quiet, automatic routine. I rarely think about the battery now; I just notice fewer grid imports on my monitoring app and a much smaller bill. It has made our solar panels feel useful.
