Running my rooftop solar panels with a battery has changed how I use electricity at home.
I installed a growatt 3000 48v 48V Battery after getting tired of watching evening power rates eat into the savings from my solar array. Before the installation, I sent excess daytime energy back to the grid and then bought it back during the expensive 5-to-9pm window. The battery now charges from solar around lunchtime and runs my refrigerator, router, lights, and heat-pump water heater after sunset.
At first I was surprised by how much those ordinary loads added up. During a typical summer evening, the battery covers nearly everything until I go to bed. My grid meter barely moves, and my daily bill dropped noticeably. My utility statements went from roughly $180 a month to $65 during the hottest months. That is not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison because weather changes, but the peak-hour reduction is obvious.
The only hiccup came in the first week. One morning the battery showed a low state-of-charge warning even though the app said it had charged overnight. I checked the cable connections and found one battery terminal slightly loose. After shutting down the inverter, tightening it, and restarting the system, the warning disappeared. I also changed the charge settings so the battery would prioritize solar charging instead of grid charging. Since then, it has been boring in the best possible way.
I check the monitoring app a couple of times a week, mostly to watch battery state of charge and inverter temperature. On cloudy days, it may reach only 55%, so I avoid running the dishwasher and washing machine together. That small habit keeps backup power available for outages.
For my household, the biggest win is not total energy independence; rather, it is shifting consumption away from peak pricing consistently.
