I installed a 10kWh solar battery beside my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying electricity during our utility’s expensive evening window. I set the inverter to charge from solar first and discharge from 4–9 p.m. On sunny days, it usually reaches 100 percent by lunchtime. We lost grid power during a windy evening, and the transfer was quick enough that the Wi-Fi router never restarted. I did notice the inverter fan running loudly for about ten minutes, but the wall temperature was normal and the noise stopped once the load settled.
One small troubleshooting moment happened when the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The monitoring app showed “standby,” not an error. I found the utility had updated its time-of-use schedule, so I reselected my tariff and rebooted the gateway. It worked immediately. That taught me to check settings after utility changes rather than assume the hardware failed.
I have seen people discuss building a diy electric car battery, but I chose a home energy storage unit with battery management and warranty. It cost more than a homemade project, yet the predictable peak savings and peace of mind have made it worthwhile. My advice is to size the solar battery around your evening load, not your daily consumption.
