After two months of using my home battery, the biggest change is how little attention I pay to peak-hour electricity prices. I installed a 10 kWh catl lithium ion battery beside my inverter. We already had rooftop solar, but by dinner time the panels were quiet and the house was pulling expensive grid power.
On a normal sunny day, the battery reaches about 95 percent by mid-afternoon. I set it to hold that charge until 4 p.m., then it supplies the kitchen, lights, television, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. Our utility’s peak period runs from 4 to 9 p.m., so this simple schedule has made the most noticeable difference. Before storage, our bill averaged around $6. After installation, sunny days are usually $2 to $3. It is not a dramatic promise of energy independence. Across a month, I am saving roughly $70, depending on weather and laundry habits.
The one minor headache happened during a cloudy week. The battery reserve fell to 18 percent, and I noticed it stopped discharging at my usual 20 percent backup setting. The app showed the system had switched to battery protection mode, which made sense after several low-solar days. I temporarily lowered my evening usage and let the grid recharge it overnight, then restored the setting. No technician visit was needed.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. There is no daily maintenance, and the battery storage system switches between solar charging, home backup, and grid support without me touching anything. I watch the state of charge during storms, but I no longer obsess over every cloud. For my household, the value is straightforward: use my own solar energy later and avoid the most expensive hours.
