Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Last summer I added a 10 kWh home battery to my rooftop solar system, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting expensive. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside the garage, connected it to my existing inverter, and configured the bluesun inverter to charge from solar during the day and discharge after dinner. I was nervous about losing power during the changeover, but we never noticed even a flicker.
The biggest difference showed up on my utility bill. Before storage, our household regularly crossed into the higher evening rate period. Now the battery carries the refrigerator, router, lights, and television from roughly 5 p.m. until bedtime. In the first full month, my bill fell by about 38 percent, despite similar weather and no change in our habits.
That isn’t a perfect monthly saving, since cloudy weeks leave less energy available to store. On those days, the battery reaches its reserve earlier, and we sometimes buy power overnight. Still, watching the app show solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in real time has made the savings feel tangible rather than theoretical.
I did have one mildly annoying morning. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The inverter app reported “waiting for grid conditions,” although the grid was fine. I power-cycled the system using the manufacturer’s instructions, waited five minutes, and restarted it. Discharge resumed that evening. I also lowered the backup reserve from 30 percent to 20 percent, which gave us more usable capacity without making me uncomfortable during outages.
For me, the best part is not energy independence; it is using clean solar power when rates are highest. The battery has paid for itself faster than I expected, keeping evenings comfortable.
