I installed my solar battery last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar panels already covered most daytime use, but the real savings started once I could store that excess power instead of exporting it for a tiny credit.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. I now run the dishwasher, lights, television, and sometimes the heat pump from the battery. Before installation, those hours were when my electricity bill climbed. After adding battery storage, my monthly bill dropped by roughly 30 to 40 percent, depending on cloudy weather. That feels more meaningful than the headline estimate because I can see the difference on actual utility statements.
My system is not huge: a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a hybrid inverter. I chose a wall-mounted unit with an app that shows solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption. The app is useful, although I learned not to obsess over every percentage. On a sunny day, the battery usually reaches full charge by midafternoon and carries us through dinner easily.
The one minor troubleshooting moment happened during a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging for about twenty minutes, and the app briefly showed an error. I checked the manual, restarted the inverter connection, and waited. It recovered without a service call. Since then, I have left automatic controls enabled and kept a small reserve for outages. During one blackout, the battery kept the refrigerator and Wi-Fi running overnight.
