Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Finally, after installing my home solar battery last spring, I stopped treating my rooftop panels as a daytime-only investment. The 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery now charges from excess solar through the afternoon and runs my house after sunset.
The biggest difference shows up during peak hours. My utility charges the highest rate from 4:00 to 9:00, exactly when we cook dinner, run the dishwasher, and use lights. Before adding storage, those habits pushed my evening bill noticeably higher. Now the battery carries roughly 70% of our evening load, and my monthly electricity bill has fallen by about $65, depending on weather. On sunny weeks, I see the inverter showing nearly zero grid import until late evening. That feels more satisfying than I expected, especially because I am using power I generated myself instead of buying it at the worst rate.
One small problem appeared during the first hot spell. The battery stopped discharging at 20% state of charge, although the app displayed plenty of available capacity. I initially thought the solar battery was failing. After checking the settings, I found that backup reserve had been accidentally raised during commissioning. Lowering it to 10% immediately restored the missing capacity. That minor lesson made me appreciate having a clear monitoring app and an installer who answered questions quickly.
I had compared several affordable lithium batteries before buying, and I am glad I prioritized usable capacity, warranty support, and an inverter with sensible controls over the cheapest quote. The system has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made it steadier and more predictable. For our household, that is the practical win: solar self-consumption went up, peak-hour grid use went down, and the battery does its job every night. I rarely think about it now, which may be the best compliment.
