2,000 watts of rooftop solar sounded impressive when I first installed it, but the real difference came after adding a home battery storage system. Before the battery, my panels produced plenty of power during the afternoon, yet I still bought electricity from the grid every evening when rates were highest.
My 10 kWh lithium battery now charges from excess solar around midday and runs the house through the expensive period from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. I usually keep the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and a few outlets powered from battery energy. On sunny days, that has reduced my evening grid use dramatically. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $145 to between $65 and $80, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. One small surprise was learning that the battery inverter does not always switch modes instantly.
