Keeping our solar battery system running for six months, I’ve become slightly obsessed with checking the app each morning. The setup is a 5kw solar inverter paired with a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery and about 4.5kW of rooftop panels. I chose the battery mainly to avoid buying expensive evening electricity, and that has worked better than I expected.
On sunny days, the panels finish charging the battery around lunchtime. After that, our house runs from stored solar power until roughly 11 p.m., including the induction cooker, refrigerator, lights, and television. The battery automatically switches to grid power when its reserve reaches 20 percent, which gives me peace of mind overnight.
Before installation, our high-use evenings regularly landed in the peak tariff window. Now most of that consumption comes from the battery. My electricity bill has fallen from around $210 per month to $118 on average. That’s roughly $92 saved monthly, although winter savings are smaller because short cloudy days leave less energy to store. I don’t count the export credits in that estimate, so the reduction feels real.
My only frustrating moment came during the first week. The battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the app showed plenty of charge. I found the inverter had switched into backup reserve mode after a brief grid flicker. A restart from the app didn’t help, but turning off the battery isolator for five minutes and powering it back up cleared the warning. Support later explained that the firmware had misread the grid event. They pushed an update, and it hasn’t happened again.
I still check the state of charge before running the washing machine overnight, because real savings depend on having stored energy available. Overall, this solar battery has made our energy use quieter, more predictable, and noticeably cheaper.
