Keeping the lights on during evening outages was the main reason I installed a solar battery system at home. Before that, my rooftop solar panels sent most of their daytime energy straight to the grid, while I bought expensive electricity after sunset. The change has been surprisingly practical rather than glamorous.
My installer fitted a 10kWh lithium battery with a 5kva hybrid inverter. Setup took most of a day. The electrician labeled the circuits carefully and left the battery in a shaded utility area. I appreciated the simple monitoring app, although the first version showed confusing arrows for charging and discharging. A quick firmware update fixed that, and now I can see solar generation, battery state of charge, and grid use without guessing.
The biggest benefit appears between 4pm and 9pm. I set the battery to charge from solar first and discharge during those peak hours. On sunny days, it usually covers our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and evening cooking. My monthly bill dropped from around $210 to $125, though the exact saving changes with weather and air conditioner use. The battery does not eliminate the bill, but avoiding peak electricity rates is where I notice the difference.
One minor hiccup happened during a very cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the inverter switched to grid power overnight. I initially thought something had failed. The app showed the reserve setting was 30%, which was sensible for backup but too conservative for that stretch. I lowered it to 20%, then restored 30% after the weather improved. That small adjustment taught me to check settings before blaming the hardware.
After six months, I am happiest with the quiet operation and predictable evening savings. I rarely think about the solar battery now; it simply does its job.
