8 months ago, I installed a 10kWh solar battery beside my inverter, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed our evenings. Before that, my rooftop solar produced plenty during the day, but we still bought expensive electricity after dinner. With the battery charged by lunchtime, it now runs our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the peak period. Our monthly grid import dropped from roughly 620 kWh to 270 kWh, despite using the same appliances. At our current tariff, that saves about $70–$85 each month.
The setup itself was straightforward. The installer configured a 48 volt bms for the lithium iron phosphate battery and set a 20% reserve. That leaves enough backup power for our refrigerator and lights during outages without sacrificing too much daily savings. The battery inverter follows a time-of-use schedule, waiting until peak pricing starts instead of discharging too early. I did have to correct its clock after a firmware update; it began switching at 4:30 rather than 5:00. The app showed the problem clearly, and selecting our electricity tariff again fixed it.
My only scare came in January, when the battery stopped charging at 83%. I initially blamed the solar panels, but the status screen showed a temperature limit. The garage had fallen to 3°C overnight. After improving ventilation around the enclosure and letting the room warm, charging resumed normally. It was reassuring to see the battery protection working, and no reset or service call was needed.
Using our daytime energy after sunset feels better than selling it cheaply. For anyone considering a home battery, I would prioritize accurate load data, a sensible state-of-charge reserve, and a warranty with local support. The bill savings matter, but the quiet confidence of riding through peak hours on stored solar power is what sold me.
