2 years ago, I installed a 10-kWh lithium battery storage unit beside my inverter, mainly to stop sending cheap midday solar power back to the grid. Before that, my evening electricity use was the painful part of owning solar. At dinner time, I was buying power just when rates jumped.
The change was immediate. The battery charges from my rooftop panels until late afternoon, then supplies the house through the expensive window. On a weekday, I use about 6–7 kWh after sunset, so the battery usually covers nearly everything: lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, and a heat-pump cycle. My monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $110, although weather and utility pricing make the difference vary. That is around $75 saved most months, which feels more meaningful.
I did have one hiccup during the first week. The battery stopped charging at 78%, and I assumed the hardware was faulty. After checking the settings, I found the backup reserve had been set to 20% and a charge limit was enabled. I also learned that my 42v2a lithium battery charger was not part of the solar system; I had kept it for topping up a camping battery, and its label had confused me. Once I corrected the inverter schedule, the state of charge returned to 100%.
The lesson has been to check settings before blaming the solar battery. I now keep a 15% emergency reserve and glance at the battery monitoring app. During outages, it switches over quickly enough that my router stays online and the lights do not flicker noticeably. I am not claiming energy independence; the system still relies on the grid in winter. But for my household, the combination of solar panels, home battery, and sensible peak-hour scheduling has made electricity costs steadier and solar power much more useful every day.
