2023 was the year we finally pulled the trigger on solar and, more importantly, battery storage. After months of research, we settled on a system that included a decent-sized battery bank. What's truly blown me away, though, is the peak hour savings. Our utility company has these crazy high rates from 5 PM to 9 PM, which is exactly when we’re home, cooking dinner, and running appliances. Before the battery, our bills would skyrocket during those hours. Now, it’s like we’ve flipped a switch. The battery charges up during the day on solar power, and come peak time, it seamlessly kicks in, drawing from stored energy instead of the grid. I check our smart meter app obsessively, and the difference is stark. Seeing those evening kilowatt-hours being supplied by our own sun, not the utility's expensive peak rates, is incredibly satisfying. We're using our own generated power, and the savings are tangible, easily shaving a good chunk off our monthly bill. We even have a few extra 32700 lifepo4 cells in there for good measure, which has definitely helped extend our backup power duration during brief grid outages. It's a feeling of independence I didn't realize I was missing.
