.After installing a 5 kWh solar array, I spent most of my attention watching what happened after sunset. My main reason for adding battery storage was simple: my utility charges much more between 4 and 9 p.m., exactly when our household starts cooking, showering, and running the dishwasher. Before the battery, those hours pushed my bill up even though the roof produced plenty during the day.
I chose a 3.2 v 200ah lifepo4 battery bank after comparing lithium iron phosphate options with a local installer. The installation was less dramatic than I expected: the inverter and battery cabinet went into my garage, while the electrician added a new breaker and energy meter. I did have to clear a shelf and improve ventilation, but there was no rewiring nightmare. By late afternoon, the battery was already charging from excess solar power.
The first evening felt surprisingly normal. Lights, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, and induction cooktop kept running, but the battery inverter quietly supplied most of it. My monitoring app showed the battery discharging from 100 percent to 42 percent by bedtime. It then stopped before morning, leaving enough reserve for an outage. That balance matters more to me than squeezing every last electron out overnight.
After the first full month, my electricity bill dropped from about $188 to $96. Weather was fairly sunny, so I will not pretend the battery deserves all the credit; lower air-conditioning use helped too. Still, the time-of-use savings were obvious. The system used stored solar during peak pricing instead of pulling expensive grid electricity. I have watched my daily grid import fall from roughly 24 kWh to 8 kWh on typical weekdays.
My only hiccup was a reserve setting after a firmware update. Once corrected, evening coverage stayed dependable, and the monthly savings made this solar battery setup feel worthwhile.
