2 winters ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium solar battery beside my garage, and it has changed the way I use electricity more than I expected. My rooftop panels still run the house during daylight, but the battery stores the surplus instead of sending nearly all of it back to the grid. By evening, I am drawing from that stored energy rather than buying expensive power from the utility on most sunny days now.
The biggest difference shows up between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, when rates are highest where I live. Before the installation, my family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and watched television during those hours without thinking about timing. Now I set the battery to discharge first, and the monthly bill has dropped by roughly 30%. It is not a dramatic zero bill, but the savings are consistent: around $45-$60 each month in summer, and a little less in cloudy seasons. My monitoring app shows the battery covering most evening demand, especially the refrigerator, Wi-Fi equipment, lights, and television.
One small troubleshooting moment happened during a week of heavy rain. The battery stopped discharging at 18%, even though the house was still using power. I initially thought the solar battery had failed, but the app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally enabled. That feature keeps backup capacity untouched for an outage. After lowering the reserve to 10%, the system resumed normally. I appreciated that the problem was a setting, not a dead cell. Since then, I have left the reserve at 20%, which feels like a sensible compromise.
I also keep a small 12v power inverter for camping and emergency charging, although it is separate from the main home battery inverter. It has been useful for running a router or charging phones when I am working outside overnight.
