2am was the moment I stopped worrying about our evening electricity usage. Last summer I installed a 12v lithium battery bank with a 5kWh usable capacity beside my inverter, mainly to keep solar power for the expensive hours after sunset.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. An electrician mounted the battery, connected the battery management system, and programmed the hybrid inverter to charge from rooftop solar first. I did have to change one setting after the first week: it was still drawing grid power at 6pm even though the battery had plenty of stored energy. The installer adjusted the time-of-use schedule, and that small correction made a surprisingly big difference.
Now the battery carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, and television through the evening. During sunny months, I usually reach bedtime with 20–30% remaining. That reserve feels useful during cloudy weather and short outages. On a typical day, my old bill showed roughly $2.50–$3.50 of evening consumption; after adding storage, that portion is often under fifty cents. My monthly bill has dropped by about $45–$65, depending on weather and heating use.
The best part is noticing how quietly it works. The battery begins charging late morning, switches to home loads when solar output fades, and avoids peak-rate electricity without me touching anything. I check the monitoring app because I enjoy seeing the self-consumption percentage climb.
I did have one minor scare when the app reported a communication fault after a router reboot. The battery itself was fine; restarting the inverter gateway cleared it in about five minutes. Since then, the system has been dependable, and the savings feel worthwhile on hot evenings when air conditioning runs hard. I also appreciate having backup power for brief outages, although I still avoid running heavy appliances from the battery. For my household, this solar battery has been practical rather than flashy: fewer expensive grid hours, steadier evening power, and a noticeable monthly bill reduction.
