Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
2,400 watts of solar panels sit on my roof, paired with a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery installed last spring. I chose the system mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. Our house uses most power between 5 and 10 p.m., when rates are highest, so the battery charges from solar during the day and carries dinner cooking, lights, television, and heat-pump water heating after sunset.
Before installation, my typical monthly bill was around $185. In the first full month, it fell to $72, and that included two unusually cloudy days. Since then, I have averaged roughly $80, which makes the battery feel worthwhile even though I still pay a small connection charge. The best part is watching the app show grid power at zero through the evening. I no longer think about running the dishwasher before dinner or avoiding the oven.
My setup was not completely smooth. The installer left the battery in standby after commissioning, and it did not discharge that first night. I eventually found a backup reserve setting locked at 100%. After lowering the reserve to 20%, discharge started normally. That small lesson mattered: a solar battery can be wired perfectly and still deliver disappointing results if the software settings are wrong.
For occasional maintenance, I keep the battery temperature and state of charge visible in the monitoring app. I also use a small “12v battery charger lifepo4” unit for separately topping up a portable LiFePO4 power box, not for the house battery itself. That distinction is important because my main storage bank is a 48V system with its own inverter and battery management system.
After six months, capacity still looks close to advertised; overnight usage usually leaves 35% to 45% charge. I would expand only if rates rise. For now, daily savings stay reassuring.
