Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
2023 was the year we finally took the plunge into solar. Honestly, the setup was a bit of a beast, more involved than I'd anticipated. Lots of wires, panels going up on the roof, and then the battery bank itself. Our installer, thankfully, was super patient and explained everything, even down to the specific components like our little auxiliary setup that uses a 12v 20ah lithium ion battery for some smaller backup loads. But the real magic started a few weeks in, after everything was humming.
The absolute biggest win for us has been the peak-hour bill savings. Our electricity company has these insane rates from 4 pm to 9 pm. Before solar, we’d brace ourselves for those evenings, trying to limit our usage. Now? It’s a game-changer. We charge the main battery bank fully during the day when the sun is blazing and our panels are working overtime. Then, as soon as those peak rates kick in, we seamlessly switch over to battery power. I’ve actually watched our meter go backward during peak hours sometimes, which still feels surreal. We’ve seen our evening bills drop by a good 60-70% compared to last summer. It’s not just about saving money, though; it’s the peace of mind knowing we’re not getting fleeced by the utility company for simply needing to run the oven or watch TV in the evening. That feeling alone is worth every penny.
